Smart applicator for NOVIOSENSE

Smart applicator for NOVIOSENSE

Noviosense is developing a very innovative method for continuous measurement of blood glucose levels. This technique improves the lives of diabetics who now have to take blood samples many times during the day. These finger pricks are very uncomfortable.

There is one catch. The sensor that is being used has to be placed behind the eyelid. It uses the glucose levels in the tear fluid as an indicator of the patient’s condition. FUSE has helped Noviosense with the development of an applicator that makes it possible for any patient of any age to place the sensor.

The project involved ergonomic experiments with different sizes, shapes and methods of operation for the applicator. FUSE has also assisted with solving production issues for the sensors and preparation of the clinical trials.

Christopher Wilson, CEO NOVIOSENSE

“The nice thing about working with the guys at FUSE is that they are not design diva’s”

Consultancy for ENZYRE

Consultancy for ENZYRE

The ENZYPAD enables real near patient blood coagulation analysis, with the measured data being effortlessly made available to the treating physician, irrespective of his or her physical location. The ENZYPAD technology includes a painless and easy to use blood sampling device; a test-specific single use microfluidic cartridge (“ENZYCARD”) that includes all necessary reagents and controls; and a small hands-on re-useable processor (“ENZYPAD”) that enables the reagent flow, processes the test results and transfers these immediately to the cloud. A mobile phone app controls the processor.

Sander Weernink has taken care of project management at Enzyre. He co-ordinated the device development efforts of the various partners in the project.

Consultancy on Surgical Robotics

Consultancy on Surgical Robotics

Together with the INDES design team Sander has performed a usability study for an international client. In the study three surgical robotic systems have been evaluated on three locations. This resulted in an overview of opportunities for improvements in performance and a roadmap for future development.

The co-operation led to a follow up project for a Chinese client interested in investing in surgical robotics. The team performed a market study. The market report made it possible for the client to approach two potential candidates to discuss a joint venture.

Home tonometer for glaucoma patients

Home tonometer for glaucoma patients

The tonometer for Optec is a medical device that monitors Intraocular pressure (IOP). Glaucoma is one of the main causes of blindness worldwide. Optec provides a system that makes it possible for patients to make day-curves of IOP, information that previously was expensive to generate. The tonometer puts the patient in control of his condition. Together with the app and webportal the patient and ophthalmologist have more tools to improve the treatment and quality of life of the patient.

FUSE is responsible for the complete development up to delivery of the first products. The project involves business and brand development, usability engineering, design for manufacturing, certification of the device and of the quality management system.

Car safety seat for WELLDON

Car safety seat for WELLDON

Based on a construction developed by Welldon’s inhouse engineering team FUSE has developed a car safety seat. It is available in two variants, a group 123 R44 compliant seat and also an R129 i-Size seat. The seat can be used both forward and rearward facing.

FUSE delivered the design in 3D CAD, developed the fabrics in co-operation with Leonie Roeffen and made a design mockup for presentation on the Kind&Jugend exhibition.

Wheeldrive for INDES

Wheeldrive for INDES

FUSE has helped Indes with the partial redesign of the Wheeldrive with the aim to adapt the design to a changing assembly and logistic process. The wheeldrive is a power assist solution for wheelchair users and is distributed by Sunrise Medical and makes it possible to change a hand powered wheelchair into an electric wheelchair. The hybrid solution makes it possible for people with reduced muscle power to use a manual wheelchair increasing their independence and mobility. The wheeldrive is a wheel with a power pack and direct-drive motor integrated. The controls can be used without electrical assistance, with power assist that adds a little push while handling your wheelchair or completely powered like a normal electric wheelchair.

Rethinking the original design made it possible to reduce required tolerances on parts, making it easier to produce, and increase flexibility in assembly of the product. This allows Indes and their suppliers to streamline the logistics making production more reliable. The redesign also improves the feel of the power assist. Sensors on the rim measure the amount of force executed by the user. Play in the construction reduces the feel of the controls. The new construction gives a much better experience and control over the Wheeldrive.

The new design was engineered to the point that it was ready for production with all information documented for transfer to the manufacturer.

“Choosing to work with Fuse turned out to be a great descision. Proper engineering skills and knowledge were brought to the table which resulted in a release for toolmaking within the right timeline.” Rob Heinemeijer, Technical development manager at INDES.
